How Lawyers Make for Good Alcoholics

The law profession is very unique as is every profession in the world. Dentists may have the highest rate of suicide out of any profession in the world, but attorneys have the most alcoholics out of any profession. Have you ever stepped inside the office of an attorney? Most often you will see a bottle of scotch or rum on the shelf next to a lawyer’s desk. Alcoholism has been the trademark of attorneys for some time now and there is good reason why.

When you watch the end of many law shows on television, whether it is Denny Crane (William Shatner) or James Spader on Boston Legal, or Jack McCoy from Law & Order, they are usually drinking a scotch or some form of liquor and possibly smoking a cigar. This stereotype is very true for an newport beach personal injury lawyer.

You see, drinking is a part of the culture for being an attorney, almost as if it is in the job description, attorneys work long hours, most work around 80 hours a week which is an absurd amount of time. Most lawyers arrive at their office at 8 am and don’t leave until 8, 9 or 10 pm. For lawyers just coming out of law school, it is expected of them to put in the long hours as service duty to their firm.

Plus lawyers spend the long hours at work so that ten years down the road they can make partner at the firm and put their name on the company title. Many lawyers are single or divorced and have no reason to go home. Their job becomes their life and it swallows them. By drinking alcohol, it relieves them of their burden at work, of large client cases and files they have to prepare, and their lack of a social life or love life or failed marriage.

In addition, the high paying salary that lawyers receive allows them to freely spend money. Lawyers are able to waste their money on high price liquor and wine and many attorneys have wine cellars and invest in the best of liquor. At many law offices, for New Years parties, Champaign bottles will be given out for lawyers to bring home and drink themselves to sleep or party on the big night. Lawyers also like to have big parties, which showcase their wealth, and it is always good to have a bottle of Jack Daniels around when you need it.
